Here today, I interview Shilpi Chaklanobis, the author of Panorama.

Let's begin with the interview. 

Coming directly to the casual conversation, How did it feel when your Panorama got published?

It was an amazing experience. The fact that this is my debut book made the occasion all the more special. First time is always special and it was a great feeling to see the book with my name printed on it as the author. Shall cherish the moment throughout my life. 

What inspires you to write?

Writing is my way of expressing my thoughts. Whenever I feel strongly for anything (which may be anything – my voice for any cause or simply a story) and wish to communicate with the world to put my viewpoint in front of everyone, I pen them  down. 

How hard was it to sit down and actually start writing something?

It took a while to decide that I was ready to pen down the stories.  I love reading and have been writing blogs since long, but writing a book is a different ball game altogether. However, once I was convinced that the stories have potential to entice the readers, I started writing the book.

Writers are often associated with loner tendencies; is there any truth to that?

Well if you ask me then I would say No. Being lonely and being alone are two different states. Yes, to some extent, I feel writers love to be alone because that gives them the space and time to get creative ideas. But lonely? No.

What, according to you, is the hardest thing about writing?

The hardest thing about writing is to convey the story or idea to the readers in an captivating form.

What would you say is the easiest aspect of writing?

Nothing.

Have you ever experienced “Writer’s Block”? How long do they usually last? Any tips to overcome it?

Yes, I do sometimes get writers block. Whenever I am stuck, I step away from whatever I am writing and start doing something else to distract my thoughts like reading a book or article or listen to music.

Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?

I love reading. The list of my favourite authors is very long but to name a few Jane Austen, O Henry, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, Rabindranath Tagore and Shivani are my all time favourites.

What is the most important thing about a book in your opinion?

Like it is said, “anyone who says that he has only one life to live must not know how to read a book.” And this, I think, is the most wonderful aspect of reading that allows you to travel the world and also have a glimpse of another era or place through the eyes or should I say words of the writer.

What is that one thing you think readers generally don’t know about your specific genre? Please share it with us.

Truly speaking, I do not follow any genre. I try to tell my story with full honesty and in the most interesting way. If you ask me about one word about my genre then I would say “Life”.

My Review:

Some like reading short stories and some don’t. I fall into the latter category. An anthology of short stories is certainly not my cup of coffee. But after reading this book, I have only one thing in my mind: good short stories are enough to alter your emotions. This book lets you ponder over the things which you see or feel in everyday life but usually take it for granted. As the author has mentioned, this book will certainly touch your lives and would change the way you see the world around you.
Panorama is an anthology of 15 short stories. Well the review would be long if I describe every story, so let me make it short and tell you about the stories which made me fall in love with this book.

The first chapter ‘Wok’ is an emotional story between a mother and her daughter. It speaks of love and care. This story is one of my favorite story from the book and it really provides a great start to the book. After reading this story, my brain urged me to turn the pages.

The second chapter, ‘Peanut’ is a story of a little Pomeranian. Every dog lover in this world can easily connect with the story. Just like the first story, this story has a perfect blend of love, care and emotions.

The third chapter, ‘The Thirst’ is again a story between a girl and her mother. This story has an abrupt end and might make the reader clueless. I didn’t like the story. Well while reading an anthology, you can’t expect every story to be great.

Now let me jump to the end of the book. The final chapter, ‘The Sealed Wish’ was perhaps the best from the pen of Author. A perfect end to an anthology. Beware! this story might make you cry.

The way author has narrated every story is commendable. The best thing about this book is, it has stories of different genres. Every other person can connect with the stories. Seriously this book is a page turner and never a reader would get bored. The book has only 134 pages and a perfect weekend read. If you are someone who is looking for some light read, then this book would be complete worth your bucks.

Likings: Easy and Simple language, Short Chapters, Page Turner, Twists in the stories (not all but some)
Disliking: Minor Errors, Lack of Editing

Overall: Well, I haven’t read an anthology better than this. A Must Pick.

After reading her book 'No Time to Pause', I got a chance to interview the Authoress. And here is what she has to say about her book....

Q. Before we start the interview, can you please enlighten us about the Book and the Characters of the story?

A. Firstly I would like to thank you for the interview. Regarding my book, ‘No Time to Pause’ is a narration of a typical college student who decides to stay miles away from her family to get value education. She faces a host of challenges, encounters varied adventures and meets people who leave a tremendous impact on her life.

With the college term ending, she leaves the institution not only as an academic achiever, but also a strong woman ready to face the rough world out there. She realises that life keeps moving on and there is no time to look back or regret.

The protagonist, Pari, sets to live alone and meets this peculiar character Aditi whose actions are tinged by her past. The two of them are the main characters of the book around whom the story revolves.

Q. If I’m not wrong this is a fictional book but how real are the characters? And which one is your favorite?

A. Yes. the crux is fiction but the book has autobiographical parts and to a certain extent resemble living beings in the life of the author.

Though not completely, the characters are real only with regard to their appearance and background. 

My favourite is the fictional character Aditi who mirrors my thoughts and perceptions.

Q. Tell us about your favorite authors. What book or books did really inspired you?

A. I like Preeti Shenoy. Inspiration comes from every written piece and I have had it from the time I read books of Enid Blyton.

Q. This is your first book, so what made you to step into the creative world of writing?

A. I always loved writing. I often wrote small articles. This developed into an urge to try out something big. That is how I landed up with my first book.

Q. How does it feel being an Author? Can you tell us a bit about –pre and –post Author life?

A.It feels great to be an author. Who does not like doing something which brings recognition? As such there is not much difference in my pre and post author life. But yes, once I began with my venture, I realised that there is a lot to learn. I am becoming stronger with criticism. Moreover, after being an author I became aware that I need to keep improving my skills to reach out more efficiently to the readers.

Q. So are you Writer by 'choice' or 'chance'? And also tell us the reason behind it.

A. Well choice and chance go hand in hand in my case. I always wanted to write but never expected to turn up as an author. My first book is not a literary extravagance, but just an attempt to share my experiences. So yes, it was a chance as well.

Q. Sorry for asking this, but have you been rejected for your work (book)?

A. Rejection is a part and parcel of life. I wouldn't say my work was rejected but there was no clear response from many publishers I had approached before I got my hands on Half Baked Beans.

Q. Can we expect another book from your pen in near future? If yes, anything you want to disclose about it?

A. Yes. I would be working on my next book once the genre and plot are ready. 

Q. Tell us something that we don’t know about, Pavithra Ramesh.

A. Not many know that I am a dancer as well. I have been a part of various cultural programmes since childhood. I also have a love for fashion and often check out new outfits and makeovers. 

Q. If not reading or writing, what else do you like to do?

A. As I mentioned I love dance and keep a check on fashion blogs and DIYs. It keeps me going.

Q. Before ending this, I would request you to give some advice to the aspiring writers who want to be an author...

A. I would like to say start immediately. There is no point in procrastination. If you feel you have a passion for writing, begin with maybe small write ups and nurture your skills. And as I always say, follow your heart since intuition never betrays.

My Review:

Well the book blurb tells a lot about the story. This book speaks of life experiences of a young girl, especially about her college life.

Pari, protagonist of the story is a college student who joins a private college in Bangalore, far away from her home, Dubai. She then joins a PG, meets with other girls and forms a formidable bond. It is then she meets Aditi. Aditi has a story to tell and her story is something that would make the reader turn the pages of the book. 

So who is Aditi? What does she has to do with story? Well to know everything, you have to read the book. It would be unfair to the author if I describe the entire story here.

To be honest, I was confused who the main protagonist of the story was. Though the story mainly revolves around Pari, Aditi too has an important part to play. If you guys are looking for a light read then you would love reading this book. But lack of strong, intense contents would be a 'No-No' among the novel freaks. 

Well, if you someone who is new into the world of books then you would love to read this book and dive into the world of energetic and enthusiastic bunch of girls.

The story is slightly fast paced. Many a times I felt as if the characters are in a hurry to complete their part.

Likings: Easy Read, Chick Lit, Page Turner, Could easily be finished in a couple of hours.

Disliking: The characters are in a hurry to finish the story, Lack of editing, One time read.

My Rating: 3/5
(Chick Lit lovers would love it, intense reader might get upset)

My Review:

“Sobaimorbe. Ami Sobai ke khete eschi. Amake Rokto chai” (You all will die. I have come to eat you all. All I need is blood). The book begins with these lines. And this is enough to give you goose bumps. I started this book in the wee hours of night and after reading these lines, I thought for a second, should I continue reading it or should I keep it for some other day. I chose the former. Few pages later, everything was normal. The story was everything but spooky.

The story revolves around Renuka, the main protagonist of the story. The Authoress has brilliantly created the character, narrating every details of her life, from the beginning to the very end. While I was reading the book, I very much fell in love with Renuka. Not just the female protagonist, but also the leading male character, Shashank is a guy on whom every girl can cash on. Full credits to the Authoress for building the characters so well, that everything felt quite real.

I’m completely impressed with the storyline of the book. This book has everything; a love story, plight of women in our society, the Zamindari system of 20th century and a curse too.

‘The Curse of Damini’- After reading the title and looking at the cover I thought this book must be spooky and must have some paranormal things but here the ‘Curse’ is referred to… Well, I can’t disclose everything here. You need to read the book to know about the curse. One more thing, you might be curious to know who Damini is? Well, that’s the suspense. Don’t ask who she is, just read the book and discover Damini.

Spoiler: while reading the book, you will keep on wondering what the real curse is, and you will discover it only at the last few pages.

Likings: Easy Read, Easy Language, Strong Characters, Use of Bengali words (with proper English translation)

Disliking: Not many but this book is anything but scary. (Expected more spooky things)

I'm really thankful to Mr. Kevin Missal for giving me an opportunity to interview him. We had an online interview and this is what he has to say about him and his book.

Me: Before we start the interview, can you please enlighten us about the Book and the Characters of the story?

Kevin: Yama is a psychological/mythological thriller that deals with a serial killer who considers himself as a saint murdering those who sin in the eyes of Dharma and he needs to be stopped. The characters revolve around an ex-Black Cat commando Iravan Rajpoot, a reporter Swati Kaushik, a techie and wide range of victims who come under Yama’s radar. 

Me: If I’m not wrong this is a fictional book, but ‘Yama’ is mentioned in  Vedas too. So do you believe in Yama? 

Kevin: Yama represents the good and bad. The good will go to heaven which is swarg and the bad will face punishments in hell which is nark. I don’t personally believe in any religion but I do believe in karma and Yama represents that the most. 

Me: How real are the characters? And which one is your favorite?

Kevin: I take traits and characteristics of the people around me and form a character. So yes, they are partially real. My favorite would be Yama as he struggles with psychological trauma and I feel he’s quite multi dimensional. 

Me: This is your first book, so what really inspired you to write the book?

Kevin: Well this isn’t my first book. This is my third book. I began writing at the age of 12 and at fourteen I wrote Damien Black. I was inspired long back when the gang rape incident occurred in Delhi. I wished someone could be out there who could punish these people as the law wasn’t able to. Later, I took some classes by James Patterson (who is the thriller king) and I got to know the nuances of writing suspense, so I penned Yama down. 

Me: How does it feel being an Author? Can you tell us a bit about –pre and –post Author life?

Kevin: There’s nothing biggie. Some people call me “Kevin author” and some people think I have brilliant English but I fail to impress them and some people think how is he able to write books when his English isn’t amazing. 

Me: Sorry for asking this, but have you been rejected for your work (book)?

Kevin: Lots of times. If I count the number of rejections it would be more than 50. 

Me: Can we expect another book from your pen in near future? If yes, anything you want to disclose about it?

Kevin: Mara is going to be released by the end of the year. It’s a mythological thriller revolving around three students of St. Stephen’s College, an exiled Aghori baba and a serial killer who worships a Buddhist demon. 

Me: Tell us something that we don’t know about, Kevin Missal.

Kevin: I was very bad at Maths.

Me: Before ending this, I would request you to give some advice to the aspiring writers who want to be an author...

Kevin: Never begin your book by describing the weather. Never give your characters a big introduction—keep it mysterious. Let the reader visualize and create the character their own way. And most of all, always have a cliffhanger/twist by the end of the chapter. And believe me, you’ll be a bestseller. 

My Review:

Before noting down my opinions for the book, let me enlighten you a bit about ‘Yama’.

Yama or Yamarāja, is the god of death. In the Vedas, Yama is said to have been the first mortal who died. By virtue of precedence, he became the ruler of the departed. 

Naraka (hell) in Hinduism is referred as a place where the soul is purified of sin by its suffering. In Hindu mythology, Naraka holds many hells and Yama directs departed souls to the appropriate one. Although Yama is the lord of Naraka, he may also direct the soul to a Swarg (heaven) or return it to bhoomi (earth). To conclude, it’s Yama who decides where a person should go after life. 

Now the book has a story which revolves mainly around two characters; Iravan Rajpoot (a private detective) and Yama (a person who consider himself as God of death). You can’t judge who the main protagonist of the story is. Yama can be considered as the Antagonist of the story but his killings had reasons, so he can’t be considered purely as the Villain.

Iravan Rajpoot is an ex-army guy who is now a detective. He is a man who believes in forgiving others even if they have committed any serious crime. His only way of punishment is handing over the culprit to the police. The other main character Yama is a person who punishes people who have done wrong. He punishes the wrong ones the same way as described in the 28 hells of Bhagavad Gita. He is physically strong enough to fight with the world of sinners. But why he is in a killing spree? Does he really consider himself as the god of death? Or is he a psychopath? Or may be a serial killer. To know all about him you have to read the story. Writing everything here would be unfair to the author.

Full credit goes to the Author for maintaining the thrill and suspense till the very last page of the book. Somewhere in the middle you might get a hint or two about who Yama really is but don’t be a detective yourself, reading it till the end would definitely be worth your time. With lots of twists and turns in the story, this book is a complete thriller that will entertain you till the last page. 

Likings: Fast paced, short chapters, full on suspense, worth your bucks

Disliking: Between the pages you might relate the book to the movie ‘Aparichit’. 

My Ratings: 4/5

(A must buy if you're new into the Thriller genre. You would love reading this book)

My Review:

Before I begin my review, let me tell you one thing this book has nothing to do with any Religion. It won’t harm any religion’s sentiments. The title, ‘Losing My Religion’ has a deeper meaning and you can justify it only after reading the book. Trust me, this book is a gem. Not only the book has a love story, but it also explains the political aspects of life and how one can handle his/her life with a never die attitude.

The story begins with a prologue where the male protagonist, Rishi Rai, a failed entrepreneur is placed in the centre of New York City night’s sky. A reality show is awaiting his presence. Very soon he is going to be a part of one of the biggest reality show ever, The Apprenticeship. But things would have been completely different, had he not taken that long night drive from Bangalore and met Alex (a lead character of the story).

Rishi Rai, a gaming developer had seen many ups and downs in his life. Soon after booming in the gaming industry, he failed miserably and had no other option but to shut down his company. He goes bankrupt too. To overcome his failed miserable life, he sells his car and moves out in an unplanned journey with Alex.

Alexander Long, referred as Alex is an American guy who is in search of Nirvana. He loves boozing and smoking weeds. To be precise, he wants to explore every aspects of life. When he meets Rishi, he found a friend who more or less shared the same past experiences. Their pasts and their same opinion on way of living helped them to gel quickly and form an unbreakable bond.

The Author has narrated every detail of their adventure. From getting high in the mystic valley of Malana to buying a stack at Om beach of Gokarna was all part of their expedition. 

Oh Sorry, I forgot to introduce you all with the female protagonist of the story, Kyra Blake. An American girl, who isn’t just beautiful but much more than that. The way Author has described Kyra, I bet you will definitely fall for her. In short she is an epitome of beauty. Anyways, Kyra is the girl whom Rishi falls for. But who is Kyra? Is she just an American girl or has she some secrets to share? Well I can’t tell you everything here. You have to read the book to unveil the story. 

Likings: Author’s way of narration, Gripping Story, Page Turner, The Characters, Last but not the least, the ending. (Well the ending was expected but the turns and twists were something unexpected).

Disliking: -None-

My Review:

‘Our Impossible Love’ by Durjoy Datta was my first book of the year 2016 and trust me it didn’t let my expectations down. After his last book I was slightly hesitated while picking this book but after done with the reading, I was glad that I read this book. 

The story revolves around the 2 protagonists; Danish Roy and Aisha Paul. The author has brilliantly written the book in 1st person, simultaneously narrating each protagonist’s part of the story. One chapter includes Aisha’s part of the story and the other has Danish narrating his own side of the story. 

Again the author has brilliantly built the story and created a world where Danish meets Aisha. (While I was on the first few chapters of the book, I thought Danish and Aisha has different stories to tell but I was amazed when the Author made the two of them meet).

Danish Roy was Aisha’s counselor in school. On their first meet Danish had a crush on Aisha and she found him cute. From the start it was clear that the two of them are made for each other but love never comes that easily. It is then Vibhor comes into the picture. So would Danish and Aisha fall for each other or is there a different side of the story? Trust me through this review I’m not going to say everything about the book. You have to read it to know the entire story.

Not only this book has a love story but it also has a story which speaks about parents-children relationship, friendship, jealousy and last but certainly not the least a Gay relationship. Isn’t that something you can’t afford to miss? So go for it.

Likings: Easy read, Page Turner, Beautifully narrated, A happy ending.

Disliking: Not many but the character of Aisha somewhat seems confused. She could have acted in a little mature way.

6 Years of Relationship

20^th January may be just an ordinary day for you but for me it is a special day. It’s my anniversary. It’s been exactly 6 years to my relationship. I am not that good in remembering dates but who can forget his anniversary date, right? Well I too might have not remembered the date, had it not been my friend’s b’day.

I still remember that evening. We were enjoying a party; my friend’s birthday party. Not only was he my friend but my roommate too. At that time I wasn’t that into boozing. While I was sipping my first bottle of beer, a friend of mine offered me a cigarette to smoke. I smiled and replied that I don’t smoke. The whole group laughed at me. 

Someone from the group said, “You’re 19 now and you don’t smoke. Such a kiddo you are”. 

The ego within my soul somewhat got hurt. I didn’t want to be referred as a kid. Still, I said nothing. I continued enjoying my drink. Minutes later the room completely smelled of alcohol and smokes. It would be a lie if I say I didn’t want to smoke but something within me was resisting me to do so. Soon after, the party ended and we all returned back to our respective room. The intoxicants inside me were playing along and I was in a different world.

Exactly at 11 in the night my roommate went out to smoke. He asked me to accompany him and I didn’t want to deny the b’day boy. We were in our hostel’s terrace and looking at the moon who was smiling at us. He was puffing smokes and I was relishing the cold winter night.

“Do you really enjoy smoking?” I asked my roommate.

He nodded. I nodded too.

“I won’t force you but try it for once” he said after a couple of minutes of silence.

This time I didn’t resist. I took the cigarette from his hand and took a large drag. I coughed while exhaling the smoke but I felt good. I took another drag and the result was same while exhaling the smoke. Few drags later I was smoking like a pro. It was my first experience but definitely wasn’t the last. Finishing our cigarette we went back to our room.

With increasing stress and pressure in engineering my relationship with cigarette got stronger. Few days later we were into an inseparable relationship. And by now I was turning into a chain smoker. A packet of Gold Flake which consists of 10 cigarettes was my daily routine. I needed a cigarette in a gap of every hour. My day used to start with cigarette and end with the same too; before going to bathroom, after taking bath, after breakfast, in the middle of classes, after lunch, in the evening while sipping tea and before going to bed. Many of my friends tried to stop me but I wasn’t in any mood to listen to them. I was enjoying my life. For me relationship with cigarette was way better than relationship with any girl.

Now let’s make some calculations…

I’m smoking since last 6 years that sums up to 365*6= 2190 days.

Suppose as an average I smoke 4 cigarettes a day which would make 2190*4= 8760 cigarette in my lifetime. Wow! Even I never imagined that.

Well now to be honest my relationship with cigarette has somewhat dropped down. Cigarette now is no longer such a necessity in my life. I’m trying to quit since 2 years but failed to do so. But the amount of smoke has now reduced to 1 or 2 cigarette per day.

Wish I could completely quit it someday.

They say, An Apple a day keeps the doctor away; I say, a Cigarette every day relieves you  from every stress.
