Author Interview:

It was an honor for me to have a short interview with Uday through mail. Here is what he wants to share with you all !!

1. Before we begin the round of asking and replying, could you enlighten us a little about your book 'Brutal'.

Uday: Brutal is an action thriller which follows a few days in the lives of two broken individuals. They are brave reporters, but their investigation into a case leads them into a deathly spiral. Here is a summary of the book: "Death penalty looms over a schoolteacher who commits a heinous crime with absolutely no motive. The nation wants revenge, and an obscure vigilante group delivers it brutally, even before the trial could begin. Just when the world thinks that the bloody saga is over, two journalists dig deeper into the case. And so begins their nightmare. Treading over bodies of their leads and chased by assassins, they will soon realize that some mysteries should better be left untouched."

2. How exciting was it to write an action packed thriller book?

Uday: The interesting thing about action thrillers is that they have to be fast, very fast. There is no other way around. We cannot have slow, breezy action novels. When I began writing Brutal, my goal was to make it run superfast, but without compromising on the details or the story. To do that, I had to get inside my characters' psyche and feel what they feel. So, wherever you come across a thrilling chase in my book, you can safely assume that the author has gone through that many times over. The process was exhilarating for me.
My wife often used to look at me and say, "Why are you making a weird face?"
I would answer, "I am in the middle of a tense scene."

3. Is there any specific book or incident that inspired you to write Brutal ?

Uday: Brutal has its roots in some real life stories when did not get reported widely. People call them conspiracy theories. A lot of them are more real than they appear to be.

4. How does it really feel to be an author ?? Please do tell us a little about -pre and post author life.

Uday: Becoming an author changes you as a reader. You begin to observe things which you never paid attention to as a reader: the way characters arc; the way scenes are described; the way Chekov's gun is employed. It has become tough for me to turn off the author mode and turn on the reader mode.

Besides that, not much has changed in my personal life. Till now, at least. It has given me a sense of confidence though, that if I have a story, I can convert it into a book.

5. Sorry for asking this but have you ever been rejected for your work (book) before ?

Uday: Rejection is a part of every author's life. Some are rejected by publishers, some are rejected by readers. In fact, time and again, publishers have clarified that a manuscript's rejection often has nothing to do with its quality. So, yes, Brutal had been rejected by a couple of publishers, before readers accepted it whole-heartedly at Bloody Good Book.

6. Tell us something that we don't know about 'Uday Satpathy'.

Uday: I have lived in a lot of states in India owing to the transferable job of my father. A major part of my childhood has been spent in Assam and Nagaland. Also, I am terrible dancer but a good cook.

7. Can we expect another book from your pen in near future??

Uday: Oh yes, I am working on another action thriller. I also have in mind a sequel to Brutal.

8. Before ending this, I would request you to give some advice to the aspiring writers who want to be an author...

Uday: While writing diligently is important, reading is also equally essential. Writing without reading will often make you invent an octagon, when a circle is what you wanted. Read some of the best books and some of the disruptive books in the genre you are writing. Spend ample time in research. The work will come out well.

That's the end.. I'm really thankful to Uday for giving me a chance to host him on my Blog !!

My Review:

Let me start with the truth. The only reason I bought this book was it's price. One morning when I was checking my Twitter timeline, I saw a tweet where it was mentioned, 'Brutal' it now available at only Rs.19 on Amazon. I searched 'Brutal' on Google and then after reading some good reviews of the book I bought it.

Thriller is not my cup of tea, I like reading love stories but after reading this book, my taste completely changed. This book made me fall in love with 'Thriller' genre. Though this is the first work by the Author, I won't mind reading his books in future.

The story revolves around Prakash Sinha (a journalist), Seema (another journalist) and few other characters. Prakash has been seriously injured a few days back but yet he takes his next assignment; reporting about Nitin Tomar (a teacher who killed 9 innocent kids) case. Just when he was about to wrap up his report, Nitin Tomar gets a head shot and dies at the very moment. This incident urges Prakash to get into the depth. He then tries to investigate and solve the entire mystery of Murder and Terrorism.
(Can't disclose everything here. It would be unfair to the Author. You need to read the book to know the entire story.)

Full marks to the Author for maintaining the suspense from the very beginning to the end without making the reader bore. At some point you might need to turn a few pages back but that isn't a big deal when you are reading such a good book. This is the debut work of Uday Satpathy but trust me this book can throw a big challenge to other good books of Thriller Genre.

Likings: Fast paced, Suspense is maintained throughout the story, Doesn't make you bore, Thriller yet interesting.

Disliking: I want to take out some point to criticise the book but sorry there ain't any loopholes !!

My Rating: 5/5
(If you love thriller then this book is a must read.. You shouldn't afford missing it)
