"I really think that labeling my name as a Hindu, a Muslim, etc. might have a pre-conceived notions in the reader’s mind. I would rather call myself ‘An Indian.’

Book Blurb:

Suddenly, he saw something shiny at the bottom of the abyss. He squinted his eyes to see what it was. He ran back to his binoculars and turned them to see what it was. He was in South India and she was in North India... Have you ever imagined India being divided into two countries? Everything was going smoothly for them and suddenly, their world turned upside down. How will they get together? Will India become one again? Take an exciting journey with them from their college days in Mumbai to their life in the US and back to India when they find out that India is divided.

My Reviews:

'India Was One', isn't the title intriguing enough to pick it up and start reading?? Well that happened to me. When I received a mail from the Author that he wants to share the digital format of the book in exchange of an honest review, I readily agreed to it.
Our sentiments take a wild rise when we hear the word, 'India' and when I heard the title of this book I was eager and excited to dive into the words of Author.

The Story begins with Jay (Vijay Rao) and Kaahi (Kahani) looking each other through binoculars as they are separated by borders. A India-India border.
Yes, you heard it right. The Author has used his imaginative power to divide the country into two halves; North-India and South-India.

After a couple of pages, the story takes you to the past life of Jay and Kaahi. Being a liker of love genre books I enjoyed reading their story. Jay is a rich guy and so is Kaahi. They met and fall in love, not like those in mills and boon but a perfect and happy love. After graduation they get marry and settle in US. Life was full of happiness for them until they heard the news that due to some civil unrest, India is being divided into North-India and South-India.
Jay being a North-India and Kaahi being an South-India weren't allowed to go together to India. They had to part their ways with Jay going towards North and Kaahi towards South.

What will happen next ?? Will Jay and Kaahi ever meet again ?? To know the complete story you need to read the book. It would be unfair to the author if I post everything here.

No doubt I enjoyed reading the book but I do have some serious issues with the Book.

The Author had a great plot, he could have made this into a masterpiece. Sorry to say but a poor editing made this book nothing special.
The Author has tried to describe every Indian words that are used in the story. If you are someone from a foreign land or someone who don't speak Hindi then you would find the description very useful but being from a hindi speaking nation I had to skip those description because I knew what Idli mean or how Diwali is celebrated..
There are many incidents within the storyline which aren't worth mentioning, it should have been deleted from the manuscript.

Likings: Easy Read, Gripping Story, Author's Imagination, One can discover US, Europe while reading this book, A nice love story.

Dislikes: Poor Editing, 360 page book but the story could have been completed in 100-120 pages, Sometimes while describing certain Hindi words the Author somewhat goes out of the plot and comes back a few pages later.

My Ratings: 3.5/5
( A good and easy weekend read, should give it a shot )

Autobiography of a Mad Nation by Sriram Karri

Author: Sriram Karri

Published By: Fingerprint Publications

Pages: 384 pages

Price: Rs. 360

ISBN: 978-81-723-4565-5

About The Author:

When asked, Sriram Karri is never quite sure if the nation he was born in and loves so much, was and is really mad or if merely he is Either way, he has witnessed his country grow fondly, sadly, joyfully, regretfully and above all, hopefully. He began his career as a journalist and worked in Deccan Chronicle and Indian Express and has worked as a corporate brander with TCS, Infosys, Satyam, the Indian School of Business and also co-founded a tech start-up. He writes for The New York Times and has contributed to The Guardian, The Hindu and The New Indian Express. His first published work, The Spiritual Supermarket, was longlisted for the Vodafone Crossword Book Award in the non-fiction category in 2008. An accomplished orator, Sriram is an invited speaker and panellist at several fora and discussions. He lives in Hyderabad with his wife and son.

Book Blurb:

'I was born in a mentally retarded country.' Thus begins this provocative, stylish and racy literary rant against India by a twenty-four-year-old awaiting capital punishment. When Dr M Vidyasagar ('Sagar'), retired chief of CBI, gets an unusual request from his old friend and the President of India to privately investigate if Vikrant Vaidya - sentenced to death for motivelessly killing his teenage neighbour Iqbal - is innocent or not, little does he know how convoluted a conspiracy he is setting foot in. With a narrative that springs forth from and weaves its way through the Emergency, anti-Sikh riots post Indira Gandhi's assassination, Ram Janmabhoomi Rath Yatra, anti-Mandal Commission protests, economic liberalisation, Babri Masjid demolition and Godhra riots, readers will find themselves in the grips of a chimerical tale, asking and answering the question: Is India truly a mad nation?

My Review:

Should I call it a Fiction or a Mystery/Thriller book, I'm really confused. Though the book says it is a pure work of fiction, the way Author has narrated the story you will fill as if you are a part of the story. Nothing seems to be fictional in the book. A reader can easily connect to the story and feel as if he/she is somewhere among the characters.

'I was born in a mentally retarded nation', the first line written in the book was enough to keep me hooked with the story till its end. The story starts with a mercy petition written by a murder convict, 'Vikrant Vaidya' to the President. Unlike other mercy petitions, in his letter, Vikrant, kind of challenged the President rather than asking for plea. Vikrant was innocent; that's what he claimed but he was ready to die for his country. He asked the President to find the truth before hanging him.

President then called his old friend and his most trustworthy person, 'Vidyasagar' (former CBI head) to find the truth of Vikrant Vaidya case. Though Vidyasagar was on a plan to retire, he took the case as his last assignment.
While the President was discussing Vikrant's case with Vidyasagar, Gujju Bhaiya got a call and he was informed that the President is showing his interest in Vikrant's case. Gujju Bhaiya was confident enough that things would go as per his plans and he has to stop Vidyasagar from uncovering the dark secrets of Vikrant.

Well if you are thinking this is what the story is, you are completely wrong. Even I thought the same. During the first few pages I thought Vikrant is the main protagonist and he will either be proved innocent or would be hanged at the end. But the story has many protagonists. It doesn't end with 1 or 2 but have many more characters than that.
(That would be unfair to the Author if I mentioned everything here, just get into the book and I bet you will find a different world after completing it.)

From Politics to Cricket, Bollywood to Emotions, Goons to God, this book has all. Never you will get out of the storyline. Full credits to the Author for keeping the mystery till the very end. You can never judge what the book has in its store before finish reading it.

P.S. This book might get into controversy, it might touch some religion's sentiments, might give birth to revolutions among youths but it is worth the read.
It a big book, start reading it on a weekend or else you might lose some hours of sleep.

Likings: Suspense till the end, Bitter truth written in a beautiful manner, a story of a different kind.

Dislikes: um.... let me think..... didn't find any loopholes..

My Rating: 5/5
(Ignore if you like reading love books, for everyone else, you should read this book)

Priya’s idyllic world turns upside down when she realizes her husband considers her dead weight after stripping her off her inheritance for his ambitions and lavish lifestyle.

Instantly attracted to Priya, Abhimanyu knows getting involved with a married woman is inviting trouble. But despite common sense, cautions and hesitations, he is drawn to help her.

Happily ever after has become a myth for Priya and trying to keep the relationship platonic is becoming more and more difficult for Abhimanyu.

In the tussle between ethics, fears and desires... will Priya embrace a second chance at happiness?

Author Interview:

It was my complete pleasure to host a round of Questions and Answers with the Author. A big thanks to her for giving me the privilege to interview..

1. Before we begin the round of asking and replying, could you enlighten us a little about your book 'Take 2’.

Ruchi Singh: Thank you Santosh for hosting me on your blog. There are two main themes which I wanted to highlight in Take 2, firstly the plight of women who were divorced or thinking of divorce, and secondly the co-existence of conservative and modern India.

Take 2 is about Priya, who is a small town, intelligent girl, for whom ethics and family values hold an important place in life. The story revolves around her struggle to carve a life for herself braving the conservative society and realizing that the choice to be happy remains with her.

Abhimanyu’s character was conceived to compliment Priya. He is far more mature than his age. If you are in love with someone you have to nurture it by showing support, care and affection. And that is what Abhimanyu does for Priya. I have tried to bring out that sentiment in the story along with some drama to entertain the readers.

And since I am an eternally optimistic person and all my stories would have HEA. I also admit to bringing a bit of Bollywood to make it a light read.

2. It may sound personal but does the book is a pure work of fiction or it has something to do with real characters??

Ruchi Singh: Its a pure work of fiction. None of the characters are real.

3. Is there any specific book or incident that inspired you to write Take 2??

Ruchi Singh: Not a specific incident but yes, predicament of my colleagues, friends who have been in an abusive relationship, inspired me to write this story.

Though in Take 2 Sameer turned out to be an out and out villain, in real life it doesn’t always happen like that. The partners are weak, they apologise and everything is hunky dory for a while, then the abuse-cycle starts again. It was frustrating to see my friends cry, and unable to end the relationship just because of emotional ties.

4. How does it really feel to be an author ?? Please do tell us a little about -pre and post author life..

Ruchi Singh: I had been working in IT sector prior to writing fiction. Earlier, I had been writing non-fiction bound by demands of work, had a boss and was getting paid handsomely :-) Now I am writing as per my fancy, readers are my boss and my finances are in red. But now I am enjoying a lot.

5. Sorry for asking this but have you ever been rejected for your work (book) before ??

Ruchi Singh: Oh, yes. No need to be sorry. I have been rejected from about 10 publishing entities, agents, editors put together. Then I lost patience of waiting and self-published. It has been a very enlightening journey :-)

6. Tell us something that we don't know about 'Ruchi Singh’.

Ruchi Singh: I hate talking and marketing my work.

7. Can we expect another book from your pen in near future??

Ruchi Singh: Definitely, while ‘Take 2’ is a contemporary romance with a spice of social drama, the next one is a romantic thriller. I have written another intense-romance novel during NaNo Wrimo 2014, which I would edit after the second one.

I might write a literary piece one day, there are lots of ideas floating in my mind.

8. Before ending this, I would request you to give some advice to the aspiring writers who want to be an author…

Ruchi Singh: This would be a cliched answer, but still:

Read ‘On Writing: A Memoir Of The Craft’ by Stephen King and follow it.
Buy a good editing tool and use it
Write, write, write and edit, edit, edit…

Thank You Ruchi .... Reading your book was a kind of treat for me !!

My Review:

Whenever I see a book of Love genre, I don't waste my time thinking whether to pick it or not. I start reading it. After completing the book, if I love the story, I praise about it open heartedly and if the story isn't upto the standards, I don't stop criticizing it. Well, this book, 'Take 2: Second Chance at Happiness falls in the former category. I enjoyed the story, fell in love with the protagonist, hated the antagonist and spent my time among the characters.

The story is basically about a girl, Priya. Her life goes upside down, when one morning her husband calls her up and says he don't want to continue their marriage life and wants a divorce. She was in a shock after hearing those words. She wanted to win him back, she decided that she will get her husband back into her life.

Honestly the story wasn't any interesting until the entry of Abhimanyu (Priya's friend's brother). But when Abhimanyu entered Priya's life, the story made me get goosebumps. The character is a perfectionist. He knows what he was doing. He tried to help Priya to move on with her life. He almost did everything to make Priya smile.

Was he helping Priya because he considered her just as a friend or did he fell in love with her ?? Will Priya move on with her life, will she start her life with a new chapter ?? Well to know the complete story you need to read the book.
(It would be unfair to the Author if I post the entire story here.)

Likings: Simple yet beautifully written, Fictional character but it makes you feel as if they are real, Gripping story and can be finished in one go, doesn't make you feel bore.

Disliking: I have read more than hundred of love books and this story isn't any different.

My Rating: 4/5 (If you like reading love stories then you must pick this book, no second thoughts)

“You are in real, real danger.” – A school teacher gets a creepy warning in his mailbox. Seven days later, he murders eleven of his students. Two months later, he is gunned down in broad daylight by an obscure militant outfit. Justice served. The nation pacified. Case closed.

But not for two crime reporters. Seeking redemption through this case are Prakash and Seema, ace journalists but broken individuals. As they follow the story, they are led to the ominous wilds of Bandhavgarh where an eerily similar massacre had occurred eight years ago. Little do they know that they have stirred up a hornet’s nest.

One by one their leads start turning up in body bags and they are chased by assassins at every corner. Soon they realize that they are pitted against evil powers pervading the business and political DNA of the country, with an unbelievably sinister agenda. People who are about to let Prakash and Seema know how brutal they can be.

Author Interview:

It was an honor for me to have a short interview with Uday through mail. Here is what he wants to share with you all !!

1. Before we begin the round of asking and replying, could you enlighten us a little about your book 'Brutal'.

Uday: Brutal is an action thriller which follows a few days in the lives of two broken individuals. They are brave reporters, but their investigation into a case leads them into a deathly spiral. Here is a summary of the book: "Death penalty looms over a schoolteacher who commits a heinous crime with absolutely no motive. The nation wants revenge, and an obscure vigilante group delivers it brutally, even before the trial could begin. Just when the world thinks that the bloody saga is over, two journalists dig deeper into the case. And so begins their nightmare. Treading over bodies of their leads and chased by assassins, they will soon realize that some mysteries should better be left untouched."

2. How exciting was it to write an action packed thriller book?

Uday: The interesting thing about action thrillers is that they have to be fast, very fast. There is no other way around. We cannot have slow, breezy action novels. When I began writing Brutal, my goal was to make it run superfast, but without compromising on the details or the story. To do that, I had to get inside my characters' psyche and feel what they feel. So, wherever you come across a thrilling chase in my book, you can safely assume that the author has gone through that many times over. The process was exhilarating for me.
My wife often used to look at me and say, "Why are you making a weird face?"
I would answer, "I am in the middle of a tense scene."

3. Is there any specific book or incident that inspired you to write Brutal ?

Uday: Brutal has its roots in some real life stories when did not get reported widely. People call them conspiracy theories. A lot of them are more real than they appear to be.

4. How does it really feel to be an author ?? Please do tell us a little about -pre and post author life.

Uday: Becoming an author changes you as a reader. You begin to observe things which you never paid attention to as a reader: the way characters arc; the way scenes are described; the way Chekov's gun is employed. It has become tough for me to turn off the author mode and turn on the reader mode.

Besides that, not much has changed in my personal life. Till now, at least. It has given me a sense of confidence though, that if I have a story, I can convert it into a book.

5. Sorry for asking this but have you ever been rejected for your work (book) before ?

Uday: Rejection is a part of every author's life. Some are rejected by publishers, some are rejected by readers. In fact, time and again, publishers have clarified that a manuscript's rejection often has nothing to do with its quality. So, yes, Brutal had been rejected by a couple of publishers, before readers accepted it whole-heartedly at Bloody Good Book.

6. Tell us something that we don't know about 'Uday Satpathy'.

Uday: I have lived in a lot of states in India owing to the transferable job of my father. A major part of my childhood has been spent in Assam and Nagaland. Also, I am terrible dancer but a good cook.

7. Can we expect another book from your pen in near future??

Uday: Oh yes, I am working on another action thriller. I also have in mind a sequel to Brutal.

8. Before ending this, I would request you to give some advice to the aspiring writers who want to be an author...

Uday: While writing diligently is important, reading is also equally essential. Writing without reading will often make you invent an octagon, when a circle is what you wanted. Read some of the best books and some of the disruptive books in the genre you are writing. Spend ample time in research. The work will come out well.

That's the end.. I'm really thankful to Uday for giving me a chance to host him on my Blog !!

My Review:

Let me start with the truth. The only reason I bought this book was it's price. One morning when I was checking my Twitter timeline, I saw a tweet where it was mentioned, 'Brutal' it now available at only Rs.19 on Amazon. I searched 'Brutal' on Google and then after reading some good reviews of the book I bought it.

Thriller is not my cup of tea, I like reading love stories but after reading this book, my taste completely changed. This book made me fall in love with 'Thriller' genre. Though this is the first work by the Author, I won't mind reading his books in future.

The story revolves around Prakash Sinha (a journalist), Seema (another journalist) and few other characters. Prakash has been seriously injured a few days back but yet he takes his next assignment; reporting about Nitin Tomar (a teacher who killed 9 innocent kids) case. Just when he was about to wrap up his report, Nitin Tomar gets a head shot and dies at the very moment. This incident urges Prakash to get into the depth. He then tries to investigate and solve the entire mystery of Murder and Terrorism.
(Can't disclose everything here. It would be unfair to the Author. You need to read the book to know the entire story.)

Full marks to the Author for maintaining the suspense from the very beginning to the end without making the reader bore. At some point you might need to turn a few pages back but that isn't a big deal when you are reading such a good book. This is the debut work of Uday Satpathy but trust me this book can throw a big challenge to other good books of Thriller Genre.

Likings: Fast paced, Suspense is maintained throughout the story, Doesn't make you bore, Thriller yet interesting.

Disliking: I want to take out some point to criticise the book but sorry there ain't any loopholes !!

My Rating: 5/5
(If you love thriller then this book is a must read.. You shouldn't afford missing it)

Shikhandi by Devdutt Pattanaik

Name of the Book: SHIKHANDI AND OTHER STORIES THEY DON'T TELL YOU
Author: Devdutt Pattanaik

Read some reviews:

1. Anupama Ma
2. Arun Diwakar
3. Sukanto

The Story:

Patriarchy establishes men as superior to women.
Feminism views women and men as equal.
Queerness questions what constitutes male and female.

Queerness isn’t only modern, Western or sexual, says mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik. Take a close look at the vast written and oral traditions in Hinduism, some over two thousand years old, and you will find many overlooked tales, such as those of Shikhandi, who became a man to satisfy her wife; Mahadeva, who became a woman to deliver his devotee’s child; Chudala, who became a man to enlighten her husband; Samavan, who became the wife of his male friend; and many more . . .

Playful and touching—and sometimes disturbing—these stories, when compared with their Mesopotamian, Greek, Chinese and Biblical counterparts, reveal the unique Indian way of making sense of queerness.

The Story:

This anthology is an attempt at crafting stories which subscribe to the genre of flash-fiction which is a compendium of extremely brief narratives and stories. This anthology strives to explore the myriad hues of life by painting 26 bite-sized stories, each based on 26 colours which commence with every letter of the alphabet from A to Z. The themes developed in these stories range from marital despair to urban city-life blues, from love to loss, from child abuse to infidelity, divorce, and much more.

This anthology is inspired from ideas which took shape during the April A- Z blogging challenge which the author undertook in 2014. Each story has been written in just one day and tries to bear testimony to the fact that short, swiftly written, and transient narratives can be as powerful as the complexly constructed lines of drawn-out prose.

The Story:

'It's all your fault.'
Mere words these are.
"But words can possess a shadow invincible enough to rob even a soul of its eternity."

In a society that finds it easier to mark sins of a victim than the culprit, Nirvi is a young girl punishing herself for the faults she did not do and avenging her hurts by defeating her own truth.
She is scared of her future, and ashamed of her past. She is failing herself, and knows it. She has had a long line of boyfriends, and hated them all. She detests the guy she is living with, runs away from the one she loves , and seduces the one who can never love her.

When Arsh first sees Nirvi, she's a free and frank girl in whose eyes sparkle the lemony zest of life. The next time he sees her, she is a voiceless doll draped in clothes that cover her body less and shroud her soul more. And Arsh can't rest till he finds out what made Nirvi give up her own real self.
Nirvi knows she is dragging herself on a path from which there can be no recovery. Can her spirit survive the treacherous downfall? Or is the pull of fear and push of desperation just too strong to withstand for a girl who believes she has "nowhere else to go" but down.

"When it's time for you to fall in love, even a lemon can become the cause of it," says Arsh.
But can love survive, when even the self love dies?
Can love survive when respect is no more?
Does true love have the power to revive a dying soul?

Find out in the pages of this brilliantly woven, intense, heart-warming and thought-provoking saga of RISING IN LOVE...

And she considers herself most fortunate that she is able to pursue her dream of being a novelist and work at what she loves best.

However, if books are Jyoti’s first love, and she’s still very devoted to them, the thrilling and steadily advancing world of technology also fascinates her. As a result, one of Jyoti’s blogs is a technological blog called Techn0Treats. In 2011, a post in this blog won her the title of Samsung Mobiler when Samsung made her a part of the team of twenty bloggers chosen from all over India through a blogging competition.
