2. Swathi Shenoy
3. Usha Narayanan

The Story:

A collection of 13 romantic short stories based in India; a culture rich country steeped in tradition. Inspiration struck me from newspaper articles, TV shows and hearing people talk. The short stories are based on that fact that arranged marriages thrive right alongside love matches in India.

1. Groomnapped is Ameya-Surekha’s story as a light romantic take on the serious issue of groom kidnappings.
2. Dark skin on a woman puts off men in general or so says the society. Beauty Is But Skin Deep is Nitin-Simran’s story that proves it wrong!
3. Ritu is twenty-five and wants to wait for her Prince Charming but her parents are desperate to arrange her wedding. Does she find her prince in An Arranged Match?
4. Dating Agencies are doing their best to get young people together to tie the knot. My friend Diti runs an informal one; inspiring the Red Rose Dating Agency.
5. A guy’s complaint about his fiancĂ©e of a few years dumping him after becoming successful in her film career felt like a rant to me. Chahti Hoon Tumhe is an ode to the successful actress.
6. Soumya actually lives life like Soul Mates but how many have the guts to? This, incidentally, is the first short story that I ever wrote.
7. Does Madeinheaven.com help bring Menka & Jeetu together with technology driven Matchmaking website?
8. I originally wrote Rahat Mili for an anthology; Rahat means ‘relief’ and is a name too. Read the story with the word in mind and it will fall in place.
9. Reema’s Matchmakers brings Arjun and Prisha together at a get-together through a matchmaking network. But will they get married?
10. Nikita wants Krish for a friend and not her husband. As The Reluctant Bride she manages to have her cake and eat it too.
11. Shweta Ka Swayamvar is inspired by the practice of Swayamwar in ancient India of choosing a husband, from among a list of suitors, by a girl of marriageable age.
12. Pappa’s Girl is about daughters of Industrialists taking over fathers’ businesses.
13. Mythology romances intrigue me; Love Match For Velan is my take on Lord Murugan falling in love with his consort Valli.

About The Author

Sundari Venkatraman

Even as a kid, Sundari absolutely loved the ‘lived happily ever after’ syndrome as she grew up reading all the fairy tales she could lay her hands on, Phantom comics, Mandrake comics and the like. It was always about good triumphing over evil and a happy end.

Soon, into her teens, Sundari switched her attention from fairy tales to Mills & Boon. While she loved reading both of these, she kept visualising what would have happened if there were similar situations happening in India; to a local hero and heroine. Her imagination took flight and she always lived in a rosy cocoon of romance over the years.

Then came the writing – a true bolt out of the blue! She could never string two sentences together. While her spoken English had always been excellent – thanks to her Grandpa – she couldn’t write to save her life.

All this changed suddenly one fine day in the year 2000. She had just quit her job as a school admin and didn’t know what to do with her life. She was saturated with simply reading books. That’s when she returned home one evening after her walk, took some sheets of paper and began writing. It was like watching a movie that was running in her head – all those years of visualising Indian heroes and heroines needed an outlet and had to be put into words. That’s how her first novel, The Malhotra Bride, took shape. While she felt discouraged when publishing didn’t happen, it was her husband who kept encouraging her not to give up.

In the meanwhile, she landed a job as Copy Editor with Mumbai Mirror. After working there for two years, she moved to the Network 18 Group and worked with two of their websites over the next six years, as Content Editor.

Despite her work schedule, she continued to write novels and then short stories and had them published in her blogs. She also blogs voraciously, writing on many different topics – travel, book reviews, film reviews, restaurant reviews, spirituality, alternative health and more.

Her first eBook Double Jeopardy – a romance novella – was published by Indireads and has been very well received by readers of romance.

In 2014, Sundari self-published The Malhotra Bride (2nd Edition); Meghna; The Runaway Bridegroom; Flaming Sun Collection 1: Happily Ever Afters From India (Box Set) and Matches Made In Heaven (a collection of romantic short stories).

2015 brought yet another opportunity. Readomania came forward to traditionally publish this book – The Madras Affair – a mature romance set in Madras.

Devika Fernando

Almost as soon as Devika Fernando could write, she imagined stories and poems. After finishing her education in Germany and returning to her roots in Sri Lanka, she got a chance to turn her passion into her profession. Having lived in Germany and in Sri Lanka with her husband has made her experience the best (and the worst) of two totally different worlds – something that influences her writing. Her trademark are sweet, yet deeply emotional romance stories where the characters actually fall in love instead of merely falling in lust. She draws inspiration from everyone and everything in life. Besides being a romance novel author, she works as a self-employed German web content writer, as a translator, and as a faithful servant to all the cats, dogs, fish and birds in her home. What she loves most about being an author is the chance to create new worlds and send her protagonists on a journey full of ups and downs that will leave them changed. When she’s not writing, she’s reading or thinking about writing.

They Killed Me

Story of My Death:

A thunder like sound broke my sleep. I opened my tiny little eyes in shock. I found nothing. It was almost dark outside, but a little warm too. I have heard many people saying the world outside is full of colors and I'm really excited to see and feel it. But what was the sound that I just heard??
And then, I heard it again. My father was shouting at my mother. Even my mother’s weep was audible to me. With that, even I felt like crying. There were two other persons who were shouting, they must be my grand-parents. My mother was standing there alone and was trying her best to keep her point but none gave a damn..

After a long heated conversation for an hour or so, finally it was decided. My fate was decided. Now it was sure they are going to kill me. I can't see the outer world now. A few days back I felt my heartbeat, little fingers were starting to grow on my hands; they are small now. I wanted to touch my mother’s hand, I want to kiss her but all my dreams will remain unfulfilled.

I still remember that day. 3 months before, I felt I am human. I was quite tiny, may be 10 inches long. Curled up in my mother’s womb I was sleeping in a warm and dark surrounding.

I still remember the day, when my mother proudly informed my father that she is pregnant. He jumped in excitement. He danced like mad. My mother was laughing looking at her husband’s childish behavior. Even my grandparents were happy. They blessed my mother and thanked her for making them so happy.

I still remember the day when I first kicked my mother. I was growing. I was able to turn and toss. When she said about this to my father, he got excited. He brought his ears near my mom’s tummy and asked me to make some noises. I wanted to shout out loud but the strength in me didn’t allow doing so.

Everything was going great till today. But today, when my mother went to hospital for her routing check up, things changed. My father asked the doctor to do an ultrasound test. My mother looked him in bewilderment. She hesitated but when he kept on insisting her, she agreed. During the test I felt as if a type of instrument was inching towards me. Will it kill me?? Will it take me out?? I was confused.

10 minutes I had to wait and the instrument was taken out. I felt relaxed.

Later in the evening, the reports were out. My father furiously entered the bedroom and shouted at my mother. My mother trembled. She cried and even begged my father but he was too stubborn to give an ear. She wanted me but they neither cared for her nor did they care for me.
It was clear, they wanted a boy. I was a girl and in this world, may be being a girl is a disgrace. The decision was made. Today is my last day. Tomorrow they will kill me.

Mom and Dad, I still love you.. Don’t miss me !!

Don't kill a Girl child, they aren't disgrace to you.. They are God's real Angels.....

Love @ Friendship Day

03-08-2008

Isn’t it strange how the time passes so quickly? It feels as if the whole thing has happened just yesterday but there is gap of 7 years between then and now. So this is how it happened......

The clock was inching towards 00:00. The hour hand was nearing to kiss the mark 12. I was holding my mobile from last 15 minutes and was trying to compose a message to wish her, a Happy Friendship Day. I was sure she would never pick my call, so to call her wasn't a worthy idea, instead, I thought of sending her a text.
At that age I didn’t know much about Google or else I might have copied the best message for her. In fact it was the first time I was sending a text message to someone. I typed some words, deleted it, typed again and deleted again. From last 15 minutes I was doing the same. I checked time on my mobile, there was only a few minutes before the clock would strike 00:00.

Exactly at 00:00, my mobile buzzed. It was from my best friend, Karan. I was in no mood to talk to anyone else, so I disconnected the call. I began typing, but cursed myself for failing for the umpteenth time. Finally there was no option but call her. I decided to make her a call. I typed her number, hit the green colored button and disconnected it in no time pressing the red colored button. I was nervous, damn nervous. I wasn't sure what would I say if by chance she picks the call, though the chances were less. A confused me finally opened the call register and dialled her number. This time it rang. After some rings the call automatically got disconnected. She didn’t pick my call.

Trust me I didn't felt sad because I was aware of that. Having no other option I composed a message with just three words, “Happy Friendship Day” and finally hit the Send option. I was sure she won’t be replying me but there was still a slight hope in my perplexed heart.

I checked the watch, 15 minutes already passed but there wasn't any reply. Keeping my phone aside, I slept remembering her and imagining how life would be with her.

2 hours later….

I got a call. It was from an unknown number. I raged with anger. Who was disturbing me at this wee hour of the night. I disconnected the call. Few minutes later my mobile buzzed again, it was from the same unknown number. I woke up and pressed the red button again. But for the third time, my mobile buzzed again, number was the same; the same unknown number.

This time I picked it and said, “Hello”.
In came no reply.

I again said “Hello” in a bit irritating tone.

But there was no reply from the other side.

I disconnected the call. I thought of switching off the phone and keep it aside but something within my heart stopped me from doing so. Perhaps I was still hoping for her text.

Minutes later my phone buzzed again. I picked it up and was just about to use all the slang I know but stopped midway as I heard a sweet “Hello” from the other side.

It won't be wrong if I say I was on cloud 9. YES! It was her. I can never go wrong on this. It was her voice. I was completely sure; it could be no one but her. For a minute I felt as if I was dreaming. Even in my wildest of dreams I have never thought that someday she will talk to me.. I pinched myself, rubbed my eyes and did all the things till I became sure I wasn’t dreaming.
No I wasn’t, it was all happening for real.

I wasn’t able to say even a single thing. Words weren’t coming out of my mouth. I was completely out of my mind because of excitement. It was a moment which can’t be described but only be felt.

I stammered while saying h…i…

But I was stopped midway by her when she said,
“Just shut up Idiot !! I want to love you for sometime, just shut up”.

Hearing this, my whole world stopped right within.
I again made sure I wasn’t dreaming; no I wasn’t.

I stammered again, ww..hh..aaaa..t.???..???

After that all I could hear was sobs. She was crying. Her sobs was clearly audible on phone. I tried my best to stop her from crying. I kept on asking her why is she crying, what’s the matter, could I help her in any way??
I did all I could do to stop her from crying. But she didn’t stop. She cried even harder. Her sobs became louder. There wasn't any other option for me but to hear her weeping.
Exactly 10 minutes later, she finally stopped crying.

This time I didn't stammer and asked, “what happened baby?? why are you crying ??”

She said the words which he can never forget in his lifetime.

She said, “I Love You…… ” and then both of us cried together....

Nobody tried to stop the significant other. They knew what they were crying for. He had the girl whom he had fell for and She had the guy who can love her to any extent.

The conversation which went after that can only be felt.

I stopped crying for some seconds and asked her not to cry……. She said she isn’t crying and cried again..
Seconds later she stopped weeping and asked me not to weep….. I said I'm not crying, how can a boy cry.. but cried again…

3 hours later, after crying the whole night, I stopped crying and asked her not to cry anymore. I said her, that her eyes must have been swollen up by now and I doesn’t want to make my beautiful princess look any uglier. She said she will sleep but she wanted to see me before sleeping. In no time, I took the gate keys, opened the main gate carefully so that nobody in home gets up, put my leather jacket on and went to see her.

It took me only 4 minutes to cover a distance nearly of 5kms; such eager I was to see her. She was standing on her terrace. I stopped my bike in front of her home. It was early morning and there wasn’t any person on road, I was able to see her clearly. I looked up, towards the sky, and thanked God for giving me the most beautiful girl of the universe.
I took a U-Turn and went to my favorite place; the same tea stall which had witnessed every moment of my love life. I lighted my favorite brand; gold flake and took a long drag of it. I was happy because now I had everything that I had wished for. I was enjoying the puffs when I received a message, it was from her.

“I know you smoke, but don’t you dare to smoke or else I’ll kill you”.

He smiled, threw his half burned cigarette and typed,

“I promise I never will.. ” (Such a liar..)

after that I typed again, “Happy Friendship Day, I can never ever forget this Friendship Day”

7 years later, Sameer still weeps remembering that day of Friendship Day.. And he broke his promise too, he smokes.....

Thank You..........

Love or Arranged: How would you get Married ??

Don't you guys think marriage is a very important criterion to get distinguished in the kind of society we are living in? I have heard many people especially the neighborhood aunties saying the so-called famous filmy dialogues,

‘Beta ab to naukri bhi lag gayi, shaadi kab kar rahe ho??’

‘Aur bataiye beti k hath peele kab karwa rahe hain??’

Trust me when you get to hear such things your mind rage to slap these guys. These neighborhood aunties are such a pain in the ass. Sometimes I do feel, even my Mother isn’t that worried the way these society peoples are.

Anyways, coming to the point, through this post I want to express my opinions regarding the so called important thing, ‘Marriage’.

As Wikipedia suggests, Marriage also called as matrimony or wedlock, is a socially or ritually recognized union or legal contract between spouses that establishes rights and obligations between them.

In simple words, Marriage is a term our society has made to unite two people (they may also be of same sex, though it is unfortunately illegal in India). When you choose your significant other and marry, it is called Love Marriage and when the same is done by your Parents it is called Arranged Marriage.

Now before jotting down my personal views on Marriages, let me begin with a story. The stories that I’m going to discuss here aren’t fictional and are true to the best of my knowledge…..
(In the public platform real name can’t be disclosed..)

She completed her graduation. She wanted to be independent, so she joined a school as an assistant teacher. There she met with a guy who was her colleague. He was smart and was around the same age of her. Days later after spending some quality time together they both fell in love with each other. Their love was true and was envied by others. If there is a term, ‘Ram-Sita’ Jodi then it would perfectly suit them.

After spending 6 long years in love, they finally decided to marry. She told everything about the guy to her parents. Her parents disagreed. Though he was smart, his income wasn’t good enough to run a family. She promised that she will work even after marriage but her parents didn’t agreed. With no other option, she decided to end her life. She took 22 sleeping pills in one go. Thanks to the almighty that her sister saw her while doing so and informed her parents. She was soon taken to the hospital and was saved. Now her parents had no other option but to agree.

They finally tied the knot. Their love won…

All is well that ends well, right??? But this is not the end…….

She got pregnant 4 months post marriage and that is when the real problem started. She now found hard to go to work. She decided to quit her job. Her husband wasn’t happy with the decision. He very well knew his only income won’t even satisfy their daily needs. He asked her to get aborted. For him it wasn’t the right time for giving birth to a child. She refused, she wanted her first child. He was stubborn, he began torturing her, not just mentally but physically too. She cried.. She cried everyday but there was no one to hear. She called her parents and informed them everything but they left the whole thing to the couple. They clearly said he wasn’t their choice, they knew this was to come someday, they left the whole thing to her……….

She was strong enough. She took the decision.. She filed a case and divorced him. She joined a different school.. Worked even in her 7th month of pregnancy.. Took leave for 2 months, gave birth to a sweet little baby girl and joined the school again.

Now tell me would you call this a failure of Love Marriage ???

Here is another story:

Her parents searched the best groom for her. She was their only daughter; they wanted to see her happy. They spent their entire saved money on her marriage. The groom’s family asked for a dowry of 20 Lakhs but her parents didn’t hesitated, though all they had was only 20 Lakhs. Everything ended with a happy note. She finally moved into the family of her in-laws.

Marriage life was all good for her. She perhaps had one of best man one would ever dream of. He was working in a MNC. They had a 2 BHK Flat, a Mercedes Benz and everything a normal human being will wish for.

He smoked, he drank, she asked him to quit, he didn’t, and she compromised.
He used to come late at nights, she asked, he asked her to shut up and she compromised.
She had no other option but to compromise on anything and everything.

She even found pictures of her husband making out with other girls, when she asked about it to him, she got a tight slap. All she did was cried and cried some more. She thought of saying about it to her parents but dropped the thought as she didn’t want to hurt them in their old age….. She decided to compromise all her life…

Tell me would you call this a successful Arranged Marriage ???

Hope you get an answer and brush my knowledge a bit….

Here are some Pros & Cons of Marriage:

Love Marriage:

Pros:

  1. You already know about your partner; their likings, disliking and everything.
  2. You have taken your own decision and no one has pressurized you for doing such. There won’t be any kind of tensions.
  3. As you already know about your partner, it would be easy for you guys to adjust with the things when living in together.
  4. Last but certainly not the least, Love Marriages generally eradicate the social evil called ‘Dowry’.

Cons:

Hilarious Image found on Google-1

  1. If it’s love cum arranged marriage, the problems might be less but if you guys have married even after your parent’s objection then you have to face the consequences alone. Less are the chances that anyone will stand by you in your bad times.
  2. When in love the couple spends most of their time over phone calls or texts. Generally we don’t show our bad habits over phone. In order to impress we keep on showing the good things that we possess. What if your partner comes out of bathroom without washing his hands?? YUCK!! Isn’t it???
  3. Assume if the marriage somehow didn’t work, you might have no one to support you. No doubt you can get back to your parents but remember how they had felt when you left them in their old age..

Arranged Marriages:

Pros:

  1. Who better know us than our parents?? How could you think they would not search the best for us??
  2. In arranged marriage there is that thing called, ‘Excitement’. Won’t your heart double its speed on the first night?
  3. The kind of society we are living in people won’t give sarcastic comment if we marry as per our parent’s choice.
  4. As Chetan Bhagat described in his book, 2 States: “In India, Boy’s family has to love Girl’s family and Girl’s family has to love Boy’s family and only then marriage is possible”. So in arranged not only the bond between the couple gets stronger, even it creates a kind of bond between the two families.

Hilarious Image found on Google-2
Cons:

  1. The biggest and foremost demerit of Arranged Marriage is, it gives birth to the social evil system, ‘Dowry’. Generally in India a rich Bride easily gets a good qualified groom than a middle class bride.
  2. Your likings might be disliked by your partner and then the no stopping arguments will continue making your married life a living hell.
  3. Who knows your partner might be having an extra marital affair out of your knowledge. He/she married you only because her/his parents forced her for doing so.

Conclusion:

You will find Pros and Cons for almost everything and Marriage isn’t any exception. Some Love Marriages are worth inspiring while some Arranged Marriages could be considered as epic love stories. But there aren’t any perfect argument to justify which of the duo is better.

Remember unlike love, Marriage isn’t a child’s play. Think twice and even thrice before taking the biggest decision of your life.

Have any say about this post ??????

Happy Women's Day 2015

Remembering that dreadful incident of 16th December 2012 still sends shiver down my spine. To be honest, it was a shame for the entire nation. We compare ourselves with the modernity of western culture, we proudly call ourselves Indian but ask yourself a simple thing, should we really feel proud or should be low down our head of shame??

I know we all are busy in our respective works and we really don’t care if someone gets raped. Well, why should we care?? She means nothing to us. Her parents should care what to do and what not to. We are happy in our life and we really don’t want to take any added pressure.

Forbid me, but what if any such type of incident happens with you or with any of your family member?? Would you feel the same way as you are feeling now or will you outrage against it?? Will you go to the police to report against the assailant or will you step out to burn him alive??

Kuch hua??

Yes!! This is what Jyoti Singh Pandey’s (she has a name, please don’t call her Nirbhaya) parent must be feeling now. They must be wishing to kill those convicted culprits. They must be praying everyday for justice. But just think for once, would they ever get justice?? Would their daughter ever come back?? The answer is a big NO…. It’s already been more than 3 years to that incident, but Jyoti’s parents are still running in and out of judicial court for justice.

This was about the incidence… Now I would tell you something which you might not know.

Recently a documentary has been released on this incidence with a personal interview with the convicted, Mukesh Singh. And this guy has something to say about the girls:

  • A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy.
  • When being raped, she shouldn't fight back. She should just be silent and allow the rape.
  • Housework and housekeeping is for girls, not roaming in discos and bars at night doing wrong things and wearing wrong clothes.
  • You can't clap with one hand - it takes two hands. She allowed us to rape her.

Well this is what the mindset of rapist was.. Indian government banned the documentary. Perhaps they feared because the documentary showed how helpless the Indian judicial system really is. I don’t understand the reason behind banning the documentary. I would request all my friends and readers who are reading this to watch the documentary. It will surely make you realize the mindset of a cruel human being.

 NOTE:

One more thing I would like to say here. Let alone this rapist, many of Indian peoples still have this type of mindset. Just tell me, if a boy can wear shorts and roam at wee hours of night boozing around, why can’t a girl do the same?? Why this kind of differentiation?? Why a girl can’t be consider equal to their male counterpart?? Why a girl can’t be treated the same as a boy?? Why a girl always has to be a sufferer??
Please people grow up!! Especially those orthodox people who think girls should stick to household things, please grow up.. In a way you too are responsible for the crime of Rape.

P.S.

She is a mother, She is a sister;
